NLEC®Annual Update Meeting Focuses on Evolving Issues in CHD Management

The Annual Update Meeting of the National Lipid Education Council™ was held in February in Naples, Florida. Approximately 40 NLEC members gathered to discuss Evolving Issues in the Management of CHD.

The meeting combined didactic presentations with case studies for a broadened approach to issues currently facing physicians. It included sessions on the newer aspects of ATP III guidelines. Also explored were the diagnostic role of CRP; the Heart Protection Study and its clinical implications; and insights into therapeutic advances, such as genomics, the nonlipid effects of statins, and the role of PPARs in atherosclerosis. Case studies presented “real-life” management of non–HDL-C, combination therapy, novel risk markers, and diabetes.

Presenters included opinion-leaders from within the NLEC as well as from around the world. Council members included chairman Antonio M. Gotto, Jr, MD, DPhil; John C. LaRosa, MD; Donald B. Hunninghake, MD; Peter Ganz, MD; Peter Libby, MD; and Jorge Plutzky, MD. Guest speakers were Rory Collins, MB, BS, England; Jean Davignon, OC, MD, Canada; and Michael Criqui, MD. Case-study presenters: Ronald M. Krauss, MD; Thomas Pearson, MD, MPH, PhD; Roger Blumenthal, MD; and Robert Heinig, MD.
